It was New Years Eve. The excitement of a new year coming and the closing of the year prior was in the air and it smelled like rain drops and grass. The art around the small, intimate venue was beautiful. The sculptures around the outside of the property were statement pieces, much like the statement of Natalie and Nelson’s love to be made into a covenant promise that evening.
I did not know Natalie (or Nelson) more than a “hello, how are you” & just a bit more small talk about a month ago, but in God’s great timing, ended up being the one privileged to photograph their wedding afternoon/night. I spent the first 10 minutes after arriving to the venue saying my hello’s to Natalie and her mom. I could see on Natalie’s face the worry of the unplanned rain and the effect it may have on the photos/ceremony. But even through that, her calm and joyful demeanor shined through more. Seeing this helped me know exactly how I wanted to capture her: soft. strong. loving. subtle. undisturbed.
Throughout the afternoon and night, seeing her pray over her very future marriage with the women closest to her prior to walking down the isle, it reminded me just how much God loves us and knows exactly what He’s doing…for our own pleasure and benefit.
Nelson was such a simple task this day. And to even label photographing him a “task” would be a disservice because he pretty much kept me laughing the entire time with his stare down glare. It was almost like a dare. “Go ahead. Take my picture. If you can.”
So I did.
You’ll see this look in a few of the photos, except for the ones with his grandma and the private images with his bride.
The rain made for the most mysterious and romantic images during the ceremony. We had no lights, no covering, and my camera managed to make it through the wetness dropping down to capture some of the most memorable photos I’ve taken to date.
I feel honored to have been present for their first look, their privately spoken vows, and to witness the start of a beautiful marriage between these two awesome people.
Special thank you to Natalie, Nelson, and all their family and friends for being a blast to hang out with and being such good sports about the weather! <3
Hope you enjoy this gallery from their special day.
